irishthings:

This “abortion stuff” is highlighting the serious problems with our laws and the lack of reproductive rights for women* in this country, and it’s in the interest of every decent Irish person to be informed on what’s going on, more than reblogging funny Father Ted gifs or a pretty photo of a castle.

If I’m shattering your hoity toity green fields and guinness image of Ireland, good. People are suffering in this country, and more people need to know.

« I actually started crying while reading the article about abortions in Ireland because well you can abort in Germany but I just found myself in so many lines it was actually terrifying. I didn't think the laws would be like this in Ireland. » — ausgetrauemt

sian-valentine:

Oh god, I’m so sorry! But it’s true, like it’s a disgrace. Irish women and women, like the woman in this most recent controversy who came here to seek help and safety, are denied a basic right to choose what they do with their bodies. It’s enraging.

Irish people get so pissed off when we’re portrayed as a primitive country that still live in stone huts, surviving on potatoes and without electricity. “We’re a modern country, look how far we’ve progressed!

Bullshit. We’re a backwards country. We claim to be secular, but the Catholic church’s chokehold continues to influence Irish society - despite decades’ worth of harm it’s done.

Ireland doesn’t give a shit about women, and that’s been made clear as fucking day since the 1937 constitution which said a woman’s place was “in the home.” Only last year did suicide become a grounds for abortion. Yet rape is not. No, women who are raped can either fuck off abroad or carry the memory of their rapist in their wombs and raise them.

Like, the X Case (in which a 14 year old was raped, became pregnant and was seeking an abortion) was over 20 years ago. At this time, the right to life of an undeveloped mammal superseded the basic right of choice of the woman. Also, it’s worth mentioning that the rapist got away with a light rap on the knuckles, subsequently found work as a taxi driver, and LO AND BEHOLD! Raped again. And the pregnant girl was left with scars from all of this, and apparently she was left suicidal after it all.

And similar cases rear their heads all the time and the country has a fucking meltdown, running around like headless chickens, himming and hawing but not fucking doing anything. It’s swept under the carpet every damn time. The problem is always deferred, never dealt with; as if they hope that women’s biological rights is just a thing that’ll blow over in a couple of years. “Sure, they got the vote, they don’t have to give up their job after marriage. What else do they want?”

No ministers will comment. They’re spineless, afraid to admit that they don’t trust women to choose what they do with their bodies. Our parliament is overwhelmingly male (221 male ministers to 25 female). It’s a man’s world, right?

They call it the “protection of life” amendment, yet they seem to have no problem letting women pay the expenses of going to England to have abortions. Bit contradictory, no?

I get so angry about this country and its abortion laws that I could vomit.
